iRacing seems to be building some close links with the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), first was the deal with Panoz to bring their tracks to the service, now, it seems, iRacing is the official training simulator of ALMS. I’m not sure whether that had been announced previously but it’s mentioned on the official ALMS site here.

On Monday (July 13), BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team’s Tommy Milner, who drives one of two M3 race cars in the Series’ GT2 class, will be featured live Monday morning on New York City’s WPIX-TV from BMW’s Manhattan showroom. iRacing, the official training simulator of Lime Rock Park and the American Le Mans Series, will have a component in the segment as well. Later that day, Milner will participate in a “Meet and Greet” for key clients, customers and fans at the showroom (57th Street & 11th Avenue ).

iRacing Tour Update – Lime Rock Park

Lotus '79

Sean Siff, who is running iRacing’s first-ever iRacing mobile tour posted an update from the Historic Grand Prix at Lime Rock;

The iRacing tour spent last weekend at Lime Rock Park, getting to visit with race fans that came out to watch the Grand Am Koni ST and GS races, along with two awesome Historic Grand Prix races. Historic Grand Prix was awesome to watch, and we got to see a lot of the cars as we were paddocked with our trailer right next to the almost 20 vintage F1 cars from the 1960s to the early 1980s. iRacing’s own Divina Galica expertly piloted both a rare Brabham and Hesketh to two top 10 finishes… and considering the competition, this was a great achievement. In case you didn’t know, Divina actually drove an F1 car in the early 1970s. This is quite an excellent accomplishment, especially in the 1970s. Watching Duncan Dayton’s John Player Special Lotus 79 got us all pretty excited for the launch of our iRacing version.

The Historic Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

This looks like it was a great event. Held 22-25 May, the Historic Grand Prix is comprised of more than 50 Owner-Drivers of authentic Vintage Formula One racing cars from the FIA 3-litre Formula that ran from 1966-1983.

iRacing member John Nelson has kindly allowed me to use some of his great shots of the cars and the race action.

Of special interest is the (hopefully) soon to be added to iRacing Lotus ‘79.

What an awsome car, makes me even more impatient for the Lotus ‘79!

Awesome, I’d love to see how the Skip feels for real, in the wet would be a fantasic challenge.

I’m still struggling in the 48’s around LRP in the Star Mazda. Hopefully this 46.258 lap can give me a few pointers;

love / hate

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Gah! What a crappy week I’ve had in the Skip Barber. It really is a love / hate relationship with that car.

I love it because it’s a great challenge to drive fast but I’m really beginning to dislike racing it this week, my SR is taking a real pasting.

There are guys driving the Skip at Lime Rock who frankly, aren’t up to it. They might be quick over a lap or two but there are so many spins and off’s over these 31 lap races it’s unbelieveable.

In my first race this week I had the slightest contact into T1 with another driver avoiding a spin (not his fault) which unbelievably destroyed my suspension and I was a lap down after the reset. A boring and incident free 31 laps later left me pretty cold.

The second race was much more eventful (in a bad way). I navigated through T1 unscathed but found a car parked at 90 degrees to the track just after the uphill section which was impossible to avoid. Another reset left me with someone to race but he binned it on the last (very fast) turn right into my path and another 4 incidents. Discretion is sometimes the better part of valour and I quit that race which is incredibly rare for me.

I think I’ll have one last attempt to race Lime Rock this week in the hope the iRacing gods smile down on me :)

Wow! This shows what a great job of recreating the tracks iRacing have done.

Week 2 starts well!

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Week 2 of my rookie season is under way, racing is at Lime Rock Park and Lanier National this week.

The experience gained from Laguna Seca in the Solstice last week is carrying over, my first race at Lime Rock was pretty solid apart from a HUGE off at T1, trying to carry a bit too much speed through. That was the only major error though so I gained a pretty good boost to my SR.

I then set a new PB of 01:05.183 in qualifying. I’m still a little way off the fast guys, I’d be very happy to post a 1:03, but it’s a big improvement on this track already.
