Lotus 79 schedule released

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Lotus '79 at Watkins Glen

Week 1 Sebring
Week 2 Daytona Road Course
Week 3 Barber
Week 4 Silverstone Historic
Week 5 Road America
Week 6 Infineon Long
Week 7 Laguna Seca
Week 8 Lime Rock
Week 9 VIR Full
Week 10 Road Atlanta
Week 11 Miami Homestead A
Week 12 Watkins Glen Classic Boot

There’s no new tracks in this schedule so it will be a fairly cheap season for me!

I wish iRacing would resist putting Lime Rock into every single schedule, especially for the faster cars. A lot of drivers despise that track so attendance is always down on those weeks when we race there. I’m sure another variation of VIR would be preferable.

Next season update

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

iRacing’s Steve Myers has given some details of what’s happening next season.

First up, news of the Lotus ‘79;

The Lotus 79 series is going to be a class B series so we have decided to have it alternate days next season with the Radical series. Lotus will be 4 days a week and the Radical 3 days a week.

That’s a bit of a suprise, I think everyone was expecting it to require an ‘A’ license. However, this might be just the thing to get some bigger fields and hopefully some splits for this hugely anticipated car.

We’ve also got news of the SK Modified and Silver crown;

* will the SK be put back on a full schedule?

4 days a week for next season and it will have a different schedule than the LM series.

* will the SC be brought back?

2 days a week for next season and I essentially just copied the schedule that seemed to be very popular in a thread our SC fans started.

Good to see the SK back on a fuller schedule, I’ve enjoyed that car more than any other on the ovals and would love to give it a go again.

iRacing have released the first videos o fthe forthcoming Lotus 79 and it’s looking rather lovely at Watkins Glen!

The Lotus 79 is ridiculously fast, it’s going to be a real handful when we get our hands on it at the start of August.

iRacing Tour Update – Lime Rock Park

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009
Lotus '79

Lotus '79

Sean Siff, who is running iRacing’s first-ever iRacing mobile tour posted an update from the Historic Grand Prix at Lime Rock;

The iRacing tour spent last weekend at Lime Rock Park, getting to visit with race fans that came out to watch the Grand Am Koni ST and GS races, along with two awesome Historic Grand Prix races. Historic Grand Prix was awesome to watch, and we got to see a lot of the cars as we were paddocked with our trailer right next to the almost 20 vintage F1 cars from the 1960s to the early 1980s. iRacing’s own Divina Galica expertly piloted both a rare Brabham and Hesketh to two top 10 finishes… and considering the competition, this was a great achievement. In case you didn’t know, Divina actually drove an F1 car in the early 1970s. This is quite an excellent accomplishment, especially in the 1970s. Watching Duncan Dayton’s John Player Special Lotus 79 got us all pretty excited for the launch of our iRacing version.

The Historic Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

This looks like it was a great event. Held 22-25 May, the Historic Grand Prix is comprised of more than 50 Owner-Drivers of authentic Vintage Formula One racing cars from the FIA 3-litre Formula that ran from 1966-1983.

iRacing member John Nelson has kindly allowed me to use some of his great shots of the cars and the race action.

Of special interest is the (hopefully) soon to be added to iRacing Lotus ‘79.

Great, great news, iRacing’s Steve Myers posted this on the members forum today;

I drove the Lotus 79 yesterday and it’s a blast. I expect it will be released in the next major build at the end of this season.

The Lotus ‘79 is the car I’ve most been looking forward to driving in iRacing and it’s seems to have been a long time coming!

Lots to look forward to in iRacing!

Friday, March 20th, 2009

One of the really cool things about iRacing is knowing it’s always in a stateiRacing of development, it’s just going to get better and better over time. New features will be added and existing features will be tweaked and improved.

Unfortunately, as members, we never have a full picture about what’s in development and therefore what’s coming next. We generally have an idea about what tracks and vehicles are on the way but less is know about upcoming system developments until they are fairly close to release.

On source of information though, is Steve Myers blog at iRacingWorld.

Steve is Executive Vice President and Executive Producer at iRacing and he regularly spills some beans in his “A day in the life of a Cat Herder” series of blog posts.

His latest post reveals a lot of interesting information;

We have a few massive projects we are currently working on that will not be ready for the next major build, but one is worth mentioning now. We are deep into development on bringing private leagues to our service in a way that will hopefully maintain the integrity of the overall service.

We knew private leagues were on the agenda but to hear they are so close is a bit of a surprise, I’m guessing iRacing have identified this as a major barrier to a significant number of simracers joining the service and want to address it to increase the subscription base. Of course, the devil is in the details but I’m cautiously optimistic and  if they get it right it will be a HUGE positive for iRacing.

It has been our intention all along to remove resets once we have the damage repair and towing features complete. It does look unlikely at this point that these two items will be finished for this next season but I can confirm that we will have the ability to make resets available by series. Starting next season we will be eliminating resets in Class C series and up. Patience and respect for your fellow driver will be very important next season…

I was anticipating damage repair and towing in the next build and I’m slightly disappointed they won’t be implemented but removing the resets is a step in the right direction. I see that as a real contributer to safe racing.

I am happy to announce that we have hired another Vehicle Dynamics Engineer and we have immediately thrown him into the fire and have him working on the Spec Racer Ford….

We hope to have the SRF ready for the start of next season and we are doing everything we can to also try and get the Nationwide version of the Impala SS ready as well.

The much delayed Spec Racer will finally make an appearance! I think it looks a lot of fun and will definitely give it a go.

We are also making great progress on the Corvette C6.R and the Lotus 79 as well, but I don’t expect those to be completed until this summer.

Great news! I didn’t anticipate the Lotus ‘79 so soon and I’m very excited it’ll be here in the summer. I think we expected the CR6 to be here for next season but I’m not as excited for that so a bit of a delay isn’t a big deal for me.

I told you that I had been working on a contract that would net you three new tin tops and that contract was officially signed last week. I will now torture you by telling you we have the announcement of these cars planned to go out this spring in conjunction with other announcements.

I am also so very close to signing a very unique agreement that will involve a popular entry level tin top series with a significant marketing campaign.

Great news but I have no idea what these announcements could be!

We have signed a MAJOR track that we will be scanning in the next few weeks that everyone should be excited for. Once again I will tease you but not telling you what it is but I will give you a hint that the announcement will come in May…

The Indy 500 is in May…

Phew! Steve gave us a lot of good stuff in that post but the question remains of what will be in the next build in 6 weeks time?
