Dale Jr. brings home the bacon [video]

These guys have a futile attempt to beat Dale Jr. at Lowes in the Silverado!

Week 13 – first thoughts

Monday, July 28th, 2008

I was quite concerned that SR was going to be suspended this week so it was with some trepidation that I’ve run a few races with the Late Models at Lowes.

All in all, it’s not been quite as bad as I feared but it’s not exactly been great either. With my ovals iRating being pretty low I’ve started toward the rear of the grid each time and the first couple of laps have been a lottery with wrecks leaving cars flying everywhere.

Once it’s settled down though and the reckless drivers have quit, the racing has been fun and it’s been really good experience as it’s my first time out on the big ovals. Drafting is fun, I was amazed to see I was lapping 0.5s quicker with a good draft compared with lapping alone so I can see there will be a big tactical element to these races, trying to work with the drivers around, knowing when to go for the pass etc.

The larger tracks seem to suit the Late Model, going back to the smaller ovals next week will be a bit of a disappointment I think but I’ll be glad to see the SR back!

Close finish at Lowes!

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Phew! In a desparately close finish for 2nd place at Lowes, I finish 3rd in the #21 car, behind #3 (Joseph Armstrong). The clip starts with #6 (Brian Harford) and #1(Steve Sheehan) storming past a back marker and nearly catching us through the very last turn. Great stuff!

Lowe’s Legends [video]

Feeling like I’m starting to get the hang of the Rookie Legends cars, I’ve started to try get to grips with the Advanced Legends in preparation for next season.

One practice race in, where I came a pretty miserable 8th (there were only 8 drivers but the ‘Strength of Field’ was over 2200…) and a few timetrials, my PB is a paltry 17.7s

Here’s Team Redline demonstrating how it should be done. I just can’t keep it on the edge like this. Amazing stuff.

Radical SR9 JuddImage via Wikipedia

After each 12 week season in iRacing there is going to be a week of fun events to try things out. The current season ends this week and the events for next week have now been announced.

There are 4 series to choose from;

  1. Legends v’s Solstice. Mixed class racing for the first time!
  2. Late Models at Lowes Motor Speedway. Up to 40 (yes, fourty!) Late Models on track, this is going to be awesome.
  3. Radical Sabbatical. I wonder how popular this will be as the Radical isn’t currently raced and I’m not sure how many people own the car.
  4. SK Modified shoot-out. Ditto #3.

One of the features of these series is that they will not affect Safety Ratings. I’m pretty dubious of whether driving standards will be maintained in this environment without the threat of a drop in SR hanging over drivers heads…

These Legends cars look SO much fun! Can’t wait to give them a go :)

This is a timetrial session around Lowes Motor Speedway in an Advanced Legends car. You get access to these when you have graduated from the rookie ranks.
